Out of the cup on Penalties

Out of the cup on Penalties

After a strange week and a restricted squad we went out of the Welsh Cup to lower league opponents Newport YMCA on penalties 4-3. 1-1 at full time and after extra time and whilst we had chances, including a missed penalty, the lads deserve credit for the way they have responded to the upheaval this week, a long trip with players needing to be up at 5 o'clock to make it to the bus always makes it difficult, but we could and probably should have won comfortably.

On a very narrow pitch the home side shaded the 1st half with their big forwards causing a few problems for our defence and we created very little except for a Boardman free kick hitting the bar, 0-0 at half time about fair. 2nd half we came out stronger and created several good chances notably to Sadler and Austin, we wasted a penalty too which their keeper shouldn't have got near; with their 85 minute goal going through the keeper's hands and Sadler's 90th minute equaliser we should have really won in normal time. Extra time was a bit end to end with both teams going close but very few clear cut opportunities and then the lottery of penalties - how come we are the only league in Europe that does not have a replay for the 1st game -  a bit loaded for the home team!

Good points were the team spirit is back and the boys are up for the battle now, good to see John Boardman has stayed, and we now have a game in hand on Porthmadog so it's all to play for. Another early start next week to Haverfordwest, one of the few teams we have beaten, but they will a different proposition on their own patch.

Well done to all in this difficult week.

Club and manager part ways

30th January 2008

As has been reported in the press and various web sites the club today parted ways with manager Alex Kevan.

"Following a review of the club's position a board meeting was held to discuss the situation. There was considerable concern that the players coming in, whilst on paper perhaps better players - from their prior track record -, were in fact a long way from match fitness, and therefore were no better than the players we had. In conjunction with this the previous, predominantly local players were being forced out of the club to find a place to play. There were imminent, more new arrivals this week, which would have compounded the problem, causing a further exodus of players before 31st January, which would have left the club with the majority of players coming from out of Wales and a push to train away from the area.

As a local Welsh club, supported by local supporters and using where-ever possible local (North Wales) based players, this was a situation that could not go on. This decision was not taken lightly after such a short time and is not a reflection on the job Alex Kevan was brought in to do, from the players views he is an extremely talented player and would have brought much to the team if he had been able to play. Also the influence of Phil Boersma cannot be denied as the players found his experience at training was exceptional.

The fact remains that we were bottom of the league before Christmas and are still bottom of the league, there are a lot of points to be played for still and we are not prepared to throw in the towel; the board feel that it is important to retain the core of good local players that hold the club close to their hearts and to build on them for the future, rather than the solution adopted by so many League of Wales sides to import players from over the border."

In the meantime the club wish Alex and his assistant Phil Boersma well for the future and to thank them for their efforts whilst with the club.
