8-1! away @ Mold

23rd November 2008

I did not see this one coming after the 1-1 at home, yes I know Mold had a weak squad, but we were missing Ows and Boskin through work & with Danny Glyn a long term injury, we even had Viv Williams on the bench. This was not a fluke one off but a scoreline that has been threatening for a time and goals coming from all over the pitch plus a couple dis-allowed. It would be difficult to pick a Man of the Match, more a Team of the Match, as this was an all round performance.

On a cold day, but a pretty good playing surface which suited us, both teams started brightly with the home side pushing forward. We soon picked up the pace and pressured for about 20 minutes before a quick interchange between Darren, Dixon & Iwan put Kev Roberts in for a sharp shot into the far corner. This  was quickly followed by a set piece Warren Gibbs conversion from a corner and a well worked goal coming from interplay between Kev and Darren for the latter to fire home. More good work from Kev down the right brought in Iwan for a slide rule pass to Mel to tap in . 4-0 at half time and cruising.

We switched off a bit at the start of the 2nd half and after a minute a mis timed headed clearance let them in for an unstoppable over head kick goal. This spurred them on but rarely troubled the excellent Paul Whitfield. We upped the pace and our front 3 ran them ragged, a crisp ball from the back to Darren out wide, a first time ball in to Mel and onward to Iwan for a great finish, a similar move ending in a penalty converted by Kev Roberts and yet again a chased down ball fell to Mel to slot home. 7-1 and some team changes brought on Dylan Owen, Sion Parry and a cameo appearance from the peerless Viv Williams. Midge saw a free kcik flash wide and then a typical Sion foraging run from back to front saw him shrug off a final challenge to net our 8th (and his dad chucked his hat on the stand roof!). In between a couple dis-allowed for late off side flags; we see it at all levels 'it is when the ball is played not when it is received' frustrating and costly as we have seen this season when the scores are closer.

A masterly display of team tactics, pace, control and some really excellent football backed up by our now resolute defence.

Fair play to Mold they did keep playing, if a little robust at times, nice to see Darren Pritchard still strutting his stuff.

A general comment floating round was the pitch like Buckley's lent itself to our style of play, where at home we get bogged down. This is something the committee will be getting to grips with now.

A good win and the goals take us up to 3rd (on goal difference) with many around us dropping points. A hell of lot to play for and from memory a better position at this time then when we won the league.

Keep it lad,s you have our backing all the way.

5-2 away win for Reserves

19th November 2008

Another good 5-2 away win against a decent mid week Uni team. The opening 10 minutes was a little frantic very pacey but no team taking control. As the first half wore on we began to play some tidy football and deserved to be 2-1 up at half time, scorers Steve Sinclair and Gafyn Buckland.

5 minutes into the second half saw us down to 10 men (again) when Sion T was sent off for retaliating against one of their defenders for a bad tackle from behind. From the resultant free kick, Gafyn Sharpe scored to put us 3-1 up. The goal helped ease the pressure of being down to 10 men.

Although having a numerical advantage the Uni were not able to put us under the amount of pressure that Gwalchmai did on Saturday and we duly broke away to score 2 more goals from Gethin Davies and Iwan Jones before the final whistle.

3 points which puts us equal 3rd with Holyhead, although they have a slightly better goal difference.

Next game is against Llanfairfechan and we have a score to settle with them after they dumped us out of the cup earlier this season.

Blaenau travel to Gwalchmai on Saturday. Lets hope the Gwalch take the game by the "Scruff" of the neck and "Skin" the Amateurs. We need someone to put the "Skids" beneath them! (Sorry lads, just could not resist lol)

All square v Flint

16th November 2008

All square v Flint

The home game against Flint Town ended all square, just!, 2-2 and with Holyhead not playing, Bala drawing again, plus Llandudno drawing we missed the opportunity to close the gap by a couple of points; but Flint were probably the best side we have played this season and with the late equaliser the point was welcome.

The pitch was a pudding, a glue pot and not conducive to the football we played at Buckley last week, but we went at the task with pace and direct running, creating several good chances which all went begging; high wide or straight at the keeper, with our keeper rarely troubled in the 1st half. Darren Thomas was rewarded for his excellent and continual harrassment with a well taken goal under the keeper on 42 minutes.

2nd half was a different game, they went wide down both sides and the game was end to end, with them defending resolutely and with strength. From a good attack through Mel, Darren and Kev Roberts the ball was quickly launched downfield and we gave away a disputed penalty, but from the Ref's position did look like one, which Beck converted. It was then all Flint, they moved it better across the poor surface and ran us ragged at times with an inevitable goal coming from a mistake and deflection past the unsighted Whitfield. As the game wore on it looked like a defeat, but as in previous weeks the lads all stuck to their tasks and kept pressing, winning a number of corners and free kicks. With the clock running down yet another quality delivery by Chris Williams from a corner was met cleanly by Rich Higham to glance the ball home to equalise.

After the match we could look back and say if only the early chances had been taken, but in reality over the whole game the draw was welcome at the death. Credit to the lads for the 100% effort in difficult conditions against very good opponents.
