2-0 away @ Lex

2-0 away @ Lex

Another win on the road and with Bala v Holyhead off, we move up to second, the chasing pack still hot on our heels this looks like the closest the league has been for some time 8 teams all in the mix.

Although this was not our most sparkling performance, there will not be many teams come away from Lex with 3 points, they are fit, fast and strong, but tend to get carried away with complaining to the officals which again cost them dear.

The pitch was flat and fairly firm if a little bobbly in places, but we started fast out of the blocks and with them unexpectedly defending deeply, we came on to them creating several good chances. The first fell to a traing ground set piece free kick, headed back across goal by Rich Highams, passing the keeper and just eluding Darren on the run in. This was followed by a deep cross from the right that Rich met in the end to volley over , if he had missed it the ball looked goal bound. A sharp turn and run from Darren put in Mel for a one on one that the keeper smothered, and snap McGuiness free kick picked out Iwan Jones who's attempted lob over the approaching keeper went wide. Just before half time a lunging tackle from their number 3 on Mitchell saw his 2nd yellow (the first for swearing at the ref earlier) and his early bath, 0-0 at half time.

2nd half they defended high up and we were repeatedly caught off side, often by a late flag when Darren, Iwan or Mel received the ball and not when the ball was played, frustrating but something to address. Despite being down to 10 men Lex continued to play in the middle, but created little in the way of chances. We forced several corners from both sides, with the pace of Iwan and Darren unsettling a rather pedestrian back four. Warren Gibbs had a 6 yard header blocked by the keeper, Mitchell had a back post header saved on the line and Austin put two narrowly over the bar. This pressure came to a head with yet another scuffle at a corner where Ozzy was pulled down and the alert linesman signalled a penalty, which the ever industrious Kevn Roberts unusally placed to the keeper's left to put us 1 up. I am told that the pinching, grabbing and shirt pulling at these set pieces off the ball, was always going to leave them open to a penalty and so it did. Fair to Lex they still came back with Carl Andrews in the middle probing and pushing, but our defence now looks to be the business and gave little away. As the game wore down yet another free kick saw sub Dylan Owen hit a deep ball at the keeper which he fumbled for it to drop into the net to give us a well deserved 2-0 win.

Suffice to say Paul Whitfield never had a save to make all game for all their endeavour, so whilst not our most auspicious performance, a job well done. Praise to all the players for the way they went about the task, The 3 up front ran their socks off again and although for little reward, their contribution should not be underestimated with defending from the front being paramount. In the middle Kevin, Rich and Dixon fought hard and won their own important battles, with the defence of Mitchell, Austin, Gibbs and Williams showing their composure and mettle to protect Whitfield who dealt efficently with whatever got through. With good vocal and on field support from the bench of Ady Glo, Sion and Midge again look value for our position.

Sorry to say Gus missed this one with the car trouble that cost me the Buckley trip, but Viv and Co. handled it all as expected.

A word for the 3 officials who ran the game well and it shows that despite criticism from all sides, they get it right more often than not and without them there would be no games.

Let's keep this run going boys and see what comes of the rest of the season.

web site changes

4th December 2008

I have added the second team table and last/next fixture to the home page in an effort to bring the teams more in line and to reflect the wishes of the club to treat both teams as all one club, if you would like more doing on this then let me know.

I have also extended the Juniors section to enable them to maintain their own bit of the site including their own news ( I could do the same for the reserves if you want).

The next development is to add in the Community projects that are going on including the new IT, Conference and Business facilities upstairs, any input is welcome.

Finally I am developing a booking system for the various options we offer including the bar and entertainment schedule, which will also have a seperate administration section.

I will be updating a lot of the site content and pictures over the Christmas period as some of it is looking a bit dated now, if you have anything to add please email it to me.

2-1 Win at home to Guilsfield

2-1 Win at home to Guilsfield

Another good win against a resolute Guilsfield side on a fairly heavy pitch

We lined up as last week and again started strongly with the pace through the middle of Kev Roberts and the wide running Iwan Jones bringing in Darren Thomas and Mel McGuiness underpinned by Rich Highams. The direct running put them under a lot of pressure and it was no surprise when Darren hit a superb left footer to open the scoring, and with a number of chances going begging it was still 1-0 at half time.

Second half they stepped up and put some pressure on, but our solid defending and confident keeper let nothing through. We broke at pace with slick passing and a near miss from Iwan, a snap shot from Darren and half chance to Mel. The second goal came from our well rehearsed set piece corner with Austin rising at the back to head powerfully against the post and the rebound bringing a quick reaction from Warren Gibbs to slam it home. A pacey run by Darren took him one on one with the keeper, who got a deflection to prevent another goal. A wicked through ball from Chris Williams, a flick on from Darren and a neat take by Mel saw his first time shot flash inches wide.As the game ran down a defensive clash of heads saw the ball bundled in for 2-1 and a hectic last 10 minutes, but we held firm for a good 3 points

Another demonstration of incisive football from the lads keeps us well placed, keep it up and the fans will come back to watch.
