6-0 at home to Llamdyrnog

Another good result against a team that don't give up and do not warrant their lowly position; 6-0 takes us level on points at the top of the table with Bala and next week's opponents Holyhead close behind after a good away win at Mynydd Isa.

We started again where we left off, on a heavy pitch, but at pace, where we dominated the first half with some direct running and a host of chances. They held out until the half hour mark when a desperate challenge on Darren Thomas brought a penalty put away by the accurate Kevin Roberts. An onslaught on their penalty box continued, bringing a number of set pieces, with one on 40 minutes headed home by Grahame Austin to put us comfortably 2-0 up at half time.

2nd half continued in the same vein and with the pressure off we turned on the football despite the pitch, which held up quite well. Several quick balls from defence to wide midfield brought chances to the forwards and more corners and free kicks, with a couple of yellow cards for tackles in frustration rather than malice. A short corner from Darren to Mel and returned to Darren saw hime turn his defender and strike a class ball from the edge of the 18 yard box into the far top corner with their keeper a spectator. Another rapid interchange between Mitchell and McGuiness saw Iwan Jones played in for a pinpoint finish past the keeper and a favour returned from Iwan via Darren to Mel whose first touch took it away from the defender for a superb shot with the outside of the foot that left the keeper clutching air. There was still time for a 6 pass move to play Darren in for another excellent strike under the grasping keeper to make it 6-0.

Our defence were rarely troubled and coped easily which gave time for them to link up well with the midfield to build the attacking moves. Whitfield had another fairly easy game as his confidence grows behind a solid defence.

A good alround display from a team that is really working for each other and showing great togetherness on and off the pitch with a deserved top spot for Christmas and the promise of an exciting few months ahead.

The club would like to thank all our supporters who gracioulsy applauded the players off the pitch and we wish them all a very happy Christmas and prosperous New Year.

Player news

15th December 2008

Having announced the confirmation of successfull contract negotiations with Chris Williams, the club would like to welcome Chris onboard for the duration of his agreement.

An ever present member of the Island Games squad and now a regular full back with Llangefni, the acquisition of this excellent player, who at the age of 20, has still many years ahead of him, reflects the clubs ambitions to rebuild and progress to the next level confident that players of such ability are happy to commit to their long term futures at the club. As an individual Chris has great footballing attributes in addition to that, his contribution to the squad has no comparison. A determined, intelligent player with great focus who has now repaid the club and the faith placed in him by signing the contract.

As a club, we extend our warmest greeting to this excellent piece of news.'

'The good news continues.'

'Having secured one signature this week, it was pleasing for the management team to tie up the transfer of Michael Edwards from Holyhead Hotspur to Llangefni after the match against Penrhyncoch.

Mike Edwards an ex-schoolboy with Tranmere Rovers and regular Cymru Alliance player with Holyhead over the last 4 years in addition to the Island Games squad, completed his transfer from his boyhood club late last night.

Leaving one good club for another is a landmark step in Mike's football career. A player of an outstanding attacking nature, with little left for error. His pace, balance and distribution are second to none, a worthwhile addition to the squad, one which will entertain and settle into a method of football at Llangefni that he has been accustomed to at his previous club. One of our targets in pre-season but eluded our pen and paper has now signed and again illustrated the club's drive in signing quality players.'

Welcome onboard Mike, it's a pleasure for us to have you here.'

All of which illustrates the club drive forward and a real hunger for success.

3-2 away win at Penrhyncoch

13th December 2008

Our longest league trip to Penrhyncoch with the pitch OK and the switch of venue paying off against a full strength Penrhyn side we ran out 3-2 winners.

We started in our usual bright and fast way with 3 early chances falling to Iwan, keeper saved first, second hit the post and the third went just over, things looked good, but on 8 minutes a misplaced midfield ball let them in for the opening goal against the run of play with it put across keeper Kenny Jones (deputising for Whitty). We stepped up the pressure with chances falling to Warren at a set piece, Iwan and Darren Thomas, but the equaliser on 36 minutes came from the impressive Iwan Jones who slid the ball wide of the advancing keeper. We pushed harder with chances coming fast and furious, a great through ball from Darren put ever industrious, Kevin Roberts in for 50/50 on the keeper which he won and got up first to knock it in. Just before half time a really bad challenge by Edwards on Darren Bach could have put him in hospital, fortunately he missed the target and only ended up with a yellow card; 2-1 at half time.

2nd half and down the hill they stepped up their game and put us under a lot of stress with our defence holding on at times against the stream of long balls over the top; this lead on 55 minutes to a dropped ball from Kenny creating a goalmouth scramble which at the 4th attempt was bundled in for the equaliser. They continued to press and we found it hard to get back into our stride, but with our resilience and perseverance as seen in previous games, we battled on to what increasingly looked like a draw. Yet again the 100% effort for 90 minutes paid dividends with 3 successive corners forced in the last 5 minutes and Grahame Austin powering in a 'captain's goal' with his head from 8 yards to give us the 3 points and keep us in 2nd place, but now only 3 points behind Bala who's game, like many today, was postponed.

Good news too with today's MOM Chris Williams signing a contract until 2010, he has been an important piece to the jigsaw of team rebuilding this season forming an integarl part of our indominatable defence.

A lot of praise due to the team who never give up and the managers who prepare them so well, great job guys

The other local game saw Holyhead get revenge against Lex winning 4-2 according to a Lex source at the game they struggled and only came into it after Lex had their playmaker Carl Andrews dismissed just before half time for a challenge when they 1-0 up, but having seen worse challenges from Holyhead earlier going unpunished. The referee obviously saw it a little differently but it equals out over the season.
