4-1 @ home to Lex

A comfortable 4-1 win that belied the true extent of our dominance in this game.. Same starting line up as mid-week and same strong bench.

Anticipating their very high line of defence the early plan paid off in the second minute with a quickly released ball from Rich Higham behind their back line for Darren Thomas to stay on side and pick up, run at goal to beat the keeper and put us 1 up; and it was really one way from there. Our very quick midfield prompted by the continual harrying of Kev Roberts paved the way for Darren, Melv and Iwan to put a lot of pressure on them, it was no surprise on 15 minutes when a return pass from Iwan put Kev in for the 2nd. Chances fell rapidly to all the strikers and midfielders that with a little more 'heads up' composure, would have seen more goals. Although there were incidents at our end they were few and rarely looked like troubling Whitfield, as the half drew to a close Melv siezed on a knocked down ball, turned his man inside out and hit a delightful 35 yarder that the keeper could only watch go in his right corner - 3 up and coasting at half time.

2nd half they came out with more purpose, but we turned up the tempo  and ran them ragged with some delightful football from back to front. Wide balls picked out in turn Darren and Melv who had several efforts either wide or saved, maybe picking out the incoming partner could have made more impact, but little to complain about. A slick ball from Darren to Melv saw him beat the keeper and graze the outside of the post, complimented by a delicate chip to Darren for a diving header that again flashed just wide, and another loose ball saw Ozzy swivel and hit the bar from close range. Ows replaced Iwan and brought his pace and direct running to the game that unsettled them even more, Sion came on for Rich Higham who had another dominant game despite nursing an ankle injury and Mike Eddy game on for JP who also had another good outing. The continual chances were bound to bring another goal and sure enough Melv worked through Ows to setup another one for Kev Roberts to put away. As we eased up in the last few minutes a speculative long range shot flew in from them giving Whitty no chance. 4-1 full time but as their supporters said it could have been double figures.

A great result against a team that beat Flint last week, but no progress in the table with the other top sides all winning.

It's going to be tight but as long as we keep winning, that's all we can do and leave the other teams to their own fates.

3-2 away win at Flint

25th February 2009

A tough must win game saw us take all 3 points at Flint last night in a well deserved win for a very good performance. A strong starting line up and bench with Warren back alongside Ozzy at the heart of the defence.

The pitch was firm but uneven which restricted our on the floor passing, but we started brightly with Darren playing wide right, Iwan wide left Melv through the middle, all taking the ball to their relatively high defensive line. An early set back saw Chris Williams limp off with a hamstring strain to be replaced by the dependable Sion Parry at left back.

The first half hour really belonged to Flint, they played a succession of high, long balls from the back and from out wide, that caused us problems at the back with their two strikers winning a lot of in the air - unusual for us. Two easy chances fell to them from a byeline cutback into the 6 yard box and a poor shot that Whitfield got a hand to, and a set piece corner that fell to them and was knocked wide. We relied on fast breakaways and whilst we controlled the middle, their style missed this out most of the time. Against the run of play, but with industrious work from Kev Roberts and under pressure from our forwards a back pass was knocked through a ruck of players which the goal keeper picked up to give us a free kick from 8 yards, Darren tapped it siedways to Kev Roberts who blasted into the roof of the net. We built on this creating more half chances, but they still hit us with an aerial attack via their front men; half time 1-0.

They looked a bit flat and slow at the back at the start of the 2nd half and we exploited this with our wide men at pace, getting behind them and running them down a sharp through ball from the excellent Iwan Jones put Darren in to beat his man for pace, turn him and hit a shot that the keeper fumbled under his body for our second goal. This was quickly followed by good work down the left with a channel ball from Ozzy to Melv and again he beat them for pace to whip in a wicked low cross for Jon Peris Jones to convert at the back post, 3-0 and cruising or so we thought, with more chances coming our way, a header for Ozzy and couple of good strikes by Darren and some good work from Iwan through the middle. With 15 minutes to go Ows Gwynedd replaced the tiring Melv, who had run his legs off yet again, to continue the pace, but a late tackle saw the influential Rich Higham came off with an ankle injury to be replaced by Mike Edwards plus some re-organisation in the middle. They brought off their defenders and threw on two strikers, including the leagues top marksman, Shaun Beck, and the game turned on its head a bit. The high balls continued, but as they fell to Beck he showed why he is top dog by converting two in five minutes - just pleased they did not bring him on sooner - to setup a hectic last ten minutes, with us fortunately weathering the storm including about 8 minutes added time. Final score 3-2 and on balance well deserved, but certainly not an easy game.

With Bala winning the positions remain unchanged with Flint falling off the pace a bit, but on this showing and with Beck up front Flint could easily beat Bala on Saturday
