great 2-0 win at home to Bala

Well we left the best for last and we were as good this week as we were poor last week, with an outstanding 2-0 win that flattered Bala on the night. This outstanding display in front of a 500+ crowd, showed the way we can play on our day.

With Whitfield back in goal, a back four of Mitchell, Gibbs, Austin and Williams and Rich Higham back in the middle alongside Peris Jones and Kev Roberts, plus Mike Eddy, Melv and Darren up front. We played away from the club house and were quickly into our stride, breaking at pace and creating numerous chances that went wayward, high, wide or at the keeper resulting in several corners and free kicks. Whitty was a virtual spectator behind the outstanding back four giving nothing away. The 3 in the middle closed everything down and released the marauding front 3 at will, with Whitty adding his accurate distribution to put the visitors under constant pressure. As half time approached the deserved breakthrough looked distant until a set piece came out for Geraint Mitchell to hit a sweet volley and send us in 1-0 up.

2nd half we upped the pace with their back four barely coped, set piece corners from Chris Williams came with one turned onto the bar and Ozzy flashing a great header just wide. The latter also had an edge of the box free kick pushed round for a corner. The inevitable 2nd came with a ball from the back, knocked on for Darren to beat his marker - a good foot taller - in the air to turn him and go one on one with the advancing keeper, but a sublime lift over him secured the game. Ows Gwynedd came on for the excellent JP to add more pace to the battle and Sion for Mitch to keep things tight. There was just time for a speculative long range shot - only the 2nd of the game -the Whitty turned over to safety; 2-0 full time.

An outstanding game and great result that shows that playing as a team and individuals, on our day we are far and away the best team in the league, and just look for consistency next season.

An enjoyable way to complete the home program, but the players whilst euphoric in the result were tempered by the what if's and if only's.

Take nothing away this team is good, well prepared, well coached and capable of taking us back up, so the treat for the supporters will hopefully come next season and it was good to see the appreciation for the lads after the game.

poor game and poor result 2-1 loss to Glantraeth

28th March 2009

End of season blues catch up with a disappointing 2-1 home loss to local rivals Glantraeth, but probably no more than we deserved on the night. A game which they had to win and showed it, but for us one to forget.

A wet night and heavy pitch with our usual starting squad, we kicked away from the club house and although mounted a number of attacks we lacked imagination in front of goal and rarely troubled them. In turn they probed and prodded away with little football but honest endeavour and on 30 minutes a needless free kick about forty yards out was well struck and with the keeper in control it was fumbled through hius hands into the top left corner. Just before half time we won a weak penalty that Kev put away to leave it 1-1 at half time.

2nd half was much the same but after 5 minutes another weak penalty was awarded which looked like sympathy for ours, and was well scored past sub keeper Kenny Jones on for the injured Whitfield. Rich Higham and Ows Gwynedd came on for Melv McGuiness and John Peris Jones, which galvanised a bit of action, but although we created good chances thye final pass, shot or effort was off target. On 89 minutes Kev Roberts was brought down for anothe rpenalty which he hit against the post to leave the final score at 2-1 and us now looking anxiously for second place with Bala beating Ruthin 5-0.

Let's hope for a good final home game next Friday to champions elect Bala as we are the only team to have beaten them in the league this season.

1-0 loss away at Mynydd Isa

22nd March 2009

A big disappointment for us to lose at Mynydd Isa, always a tough place to go and get any kind of result, but not what we deserved on the day. Sticking to the usual squad and  lineup despite Whitty nursing a back injury from warmup, we started brightly on a hard, uneven pitch in a gale force wind. We struggled to make headway against the wind and unable to get it down, under control; they were somewhat resolute in their tackling and defending like all sides that Perry has put out over the years. Arguably the best referee in the league Mr Farrell, was a bit lenient with over the top tackles, studs up and elbows flying and our defenders were left limping several times. Playing the ball high is not our forte, but on this pitch looked necessary with little to show for it. In turn they played to their strengths hoisting long high balls at our back four and on 30 minutes a mis-kicked clearance fell outside the box for John Leonard to hit a perfect volley that flew past Whitfield into the far corner, a possible contender for 'goal of the season'. We came back more strongly and a good four man move from Mike Eddy, via Darren and Melv to Ows Gwynedd saw him beat the keeper but the ball bobbled agonisingly wide just avoiding the rushing Kev Roberts. An 'off the ball' incident saw their centre forward elbow Ozzy and with him protesting the ref booked him apparently for retaliation with their man unpunished, half time 1-0

2nd half we upped the tempo and dominated the half, an early chance fell to Melv in the 6 yard box with the  keeper nowhere, but it bobbled and was hit into the ground to go wide. Darren had a couple of half chances but his shots were wayward and Kev Roberts hooked an inswinging ball that the tall keeper just touched over. The introduction of Jon Perris Jones for Darren Thomas gave us more height and strength up front, but the chances went begging. A number of corners came our way with both Austin and Mitchell hitting the woodwork and in the last 5 minutes their defender cleared the ball with his fore arm for a stone wall penalty, but the ref waved it away - not his usual standard today. A poor clearance from Whitty as they counter attacked nearly let them in for the only chance of the half, but the game ran down to leave us on the end of a 1-0 defeat.

On another day and another pitch we could have romped this, but Isa are a big, physical side and we were out-muscled at times, and have to say their goal was top drawer.
