Good opening game performance

Good opening game performance

Wrexham sent down a young squad with a mixture of youth, reserves and trialists as expected, and it proved an excellent first game for our squad. The final result of 2-0 to Wrexham reflected their full time status and the stage they are already at in pre-season. With a couple of players away on holiday or injured and the new faces looking to blend in we turned in a good first showing for the new management team and I am sure that Lee and Ian are now approaching the season with optimism. It was a good turnout of 400+ for this fixture and both sides endeavoured to play open attacking football, with the obvious emphasis, from a side coached by Wales legend Joey Jones, on getting the ball down, passing and of course, total committment. There was a continual rotation of players on and off with positional switches, so overall it is not possible to file a structured match report, but suffice to say that all of the retained players played as expected, if a little rusty, and the new guys will definitely add the quality we need.

The fully re-furbished changing facilities are a great asset to the club and the pitch looks well after the close season work and we now look forward to a quick succession of pre-season matches in the build up to 15th August opening game at home to Flint.

Reserves

17th July 2009

Due to the late resignation of the Reserve team management and the subsequent loss of the majority of the players it has been decided not to run a reserves side this season. Lee Dixon and Ian Hughes want to bring this under their control from next season after the major league re-organisations and intend to use either a local league or the proposed reserves league, to bring through the youth players from the junior sections. It has long been a wish of the club to sort this type of structure out and this clean break and the changes the football structures present is seen as the ideal opportunity to use this season to put it into practice. They will be working with the various coaches and managers throughout the next 12 months and news updates will follow as and when.
