mid week news

2nd September 2009

Good news for us on the injury front - Chris Williams' ankle damage sustained late on at Lex is a bad sprain - same as Kev lloyd - and he will miss 2 or 3 games only. Warren Gibbs also looks about ready to return too.

Mid week games - Holyhead posted their first win 4-2 against neighbours Llanfairpwll who remain pointless adrift at the bottom of the table., though they left it very late in the game according to the report. Melv McGuiness notched a hatrick , good to see him back amongst the goals and whilst we never want them to do better than us, a strong Holyhead is needed on the Island to make sure we don't get complacent. We also don't want to see any more Island teams go from the Cymru Alliance so Llanfair need to start picking up points too.

Domestic Licence

TWENTY-four clubs have thrown their hats into the ring for a place in the Welsh Premier's new slimmed-down "Super 12" next season.
The FAW says that is the number of applications received for the new domestic club licence, which is a pre-requisite for competing in the top flight in season 2010/11.
With the deadline now passed there is one notable absentee from the current 18 member clubs - Technogroup Welshpool - who have not applied because their Maesydre ground will not meet the new stadium infrastructure criteria.
The new league will consist of the highest 10 licensed clubs at the end of the season, plus one club that finishes in the top two of each of the main feeder leagues - the Cymru Alliance and Welsh League Division One - provided they also achieve the licence criteria.
"It's the start of what is going to be a very interesting, but demanding process on the clubs and the Association," says licensing manager Andrew Howard.
"The key objective of this system is to enhance the product of the national league in Wales and the licence will drive this forward.
"It will improve stadia, youth development, manager's qualifications, administration and finances, to name but a few benefits."
The list of applicants is:
Welsh Premier League: Aberystwyth Town, Airbus UK Broughton, Bala Town, Bangor City, Caersws FC, Carmarthen Town, Elements Cefn Druids, GAP Connah's Quay, Haverfordwest County, Llanelli AFC, Neath FC, Newtown AFC, Porthmadog FC, Port Talbot Town, Prestatyn Town, Rhyl FC, The New Saints.
Cymru Alliance: Buckley Town, Caernarfon Town, Llandudno, Llangefni Town.
Welsh League Division 1: Afan Lido, Barry Town, Bridgend Town.

Bit of a surprise here no Flint or Holyhead nor Penrhyncoch and no Aberaman or Goytre in the south.

3-2 away at Lex to stay top

3-2 away at Lex to stay top

An away trip to Lex saw us extend our unbeaten run to 5 games and stay on top of the league, but at what cost.

Lineup: Pearson, Jones M, Williams C, Mitchell, Austin, Williams R, Orlik, Kehoe,   Owen, Thomas, Gwynedd - subs Higham, Jones G, Roberts DG, Jones JP, Shannahan

We kicked off towards the changing room end and within 5 minutes Orlik found Darren Thomas out wide right for him to beat his man and cross low and back to the running Richie Owen whose first time left foot strike found the bottom right corner; a great start. It was soon apparent that this was not the Lex of old having drafted in a contingent from Bala plus some quick young lads. The physical side soon reared its head with their left back getting an early yellow. They won a series of throw ins and have their very own 'Rory Delap', his incoming missiles hitting the back post with ease and from one on 15 minutes Ozzy got in a header that deflected to an unmarked back post lurker to head home from close range to go 1-1. It got very physical with a lot of 'afters', reminiscent of the old Bala days but we came to grief on the half hour when Marus Orlik was adjudged by the linesman to have gone in two footed, receiving from two of their players blows to the face and kicks to the body; in return, he got a straight red but the retaliations went unpunished for the main protaganist, and so we were down to 10 men and it looked like a major struggle, 1-1 at half time despite a stone wall penalty for a foul on Darren being disallowed.

2nd half we came out with trepidation but from the first attack Robbie Williams cleverly released Darren Thomas whose first touch took him wide of their number 6 Hignett and his fierce cross shot beat the keeper at the far post 2-1. They came back in numbers and we were forced to defend in depth, Owen made way for Gerallt Jones to allow Chris Williams more freedom to push on and Robbie Williams made way for Rich Higham to sit in front of the back four. The game got very physical almost violent, but some very inconsistent decisions seeing similar tackles to Orlik's going unpunished. A fracas between the keeper, the no. 6 (again) and Ows Gwynedd looked likely to flare up as Ows had been kicked all game and Dixon replaced him with the more robust Danny Glyn Roberts to shoulder the burden. This quickly resulted in a quick throw to Chris Williams whose first time cross was met by Darren Thomas to score his 2nd and put us 3-1 up, not bad for 10 men. Time for Kehoe to get a booking despite bearing the marks of his match long kicking. More drama followed though on 87 minutes when one of the defenders who thumped Orlik earlier went straight through young Chris leaving him to be stretchered off with a damaged ankle. With all subs used we played out with 9 men and in the inexplicable 7th minute of added time their big no. 14 rose to head a back post 2nd, the whistle going a minute later.

A great 3-2 result in daunting circumstances, but leaving us with a 3 match ban for Marcus and now 5 players out injured - Kev Roberts, Kev Lloyd, Warren Gibbs, Lee Craven and Chris Williams; be interesting to see our squad next week at home to Guilsfield.

Congratulations to players and coaches for getting us through this one against a team who will take a lot of points throughout this season.
