round 1 cup win

13th September 2009

round 1 cup win

The expected win in the cup away at Brymbo was not as easy as 6-1 makes it sound, especially in the first half. Our line up Pearson, Jones G, Mitchell, Austin, Jones M, Williams C, Williams R, Kehoe, Gwynedd, Thomas, Roberts DG, subs Lloyd (on half time for Ger Jones inj.), Higham (on for Kehoe 1 hr), Owen (on for Gwynedd 75 min). Shannahan

Good sunny, dry conditions on a fair pitch if a bit bobbly and a strong wind. The first 20 minutes was very even with our pace up front causing problems and their high balls with the wind also an issue. We should have opened on 15 minutes when Kehoe had a 3 yard header into the keeper's arms. There was some robust tackling from their defenders, but it was Cefni who picked up a couple of yellow cards. On 20 minutes a wide left break by Chris Williams beat the offside with Ows Gwynedd connecting to steer the ball beyond the keeper; we continued to press with chances falling to Danny Glyn who was getting a bruising up front. Another long bouncing ball from their keeper dropped in our box bounced high over the defenders and with the keeper going for it he collided with their forward for the ball to run home. We upped the pace quickly and on 40 minutes Darren broke wide left cut to the bye line and from the narrow angle beat the keeper with a far post shot for us to go in 2-1.

Ger Jones came off at half time with a back strain with Kev Lloyd making a return from injury up front and Chris Williams reverting to left back. With the wind against them Brymbo ran out of 'legs' and the half was pretty much one way. Goals came from a through ball from Ows for Danny Glyn to slide it past the keeper,  Steve Kehoe on a yellow came off for safety as it looked like the ref had him in his sights, Rich Higham coming on to anchor the middle.Ows himself converted a quality Robbie Williams through ball, he then came off for Rich Owen. A great ball in from Darren Thomas set up Danny Glyn, whose 'Cruyf like' touch wrong footed the keeper for his 2nd. On 85 minutes Kev Lloyd got back in the groove with a deserved 6 yard finish having seen several efforts hit the keeper, woodwork or well saved.

6-1 that could have been more but some anxious moments in the 1st half made for an entertaining game; there was little doubt for the outcome in the 2nd half, where our fitness, control and pace won the day.

Into Monday's hat for round 2 to be played 3rd October, let'shope for a good draw.
